History

History of the club
The Sheerness Steel Sea Angling Club has been an established Island club for over thirty years; although we still retain the angling club name we no longer have any association with the steel mill. The original committee and members of the club were all workers from the mill, but as time has gone by and with the mill going through many changes the angling club has become a completely separate entity and we pride ourselves on being a friendly and family orientated club.

Over the last five years many of the original committee members stood down, there was even one point where the club consisted of just three committee members and the future of the club was in doubt, but in the last three years with the help and hard work of the new committee and all of the new and old members the club is back and looking forward to a very bright future. The ten individuals who form the new committee have a vast amount of angling knowledge between them and their dedication to running the club is beginning to pay off with match attendances on the up and lots of praise on the smooth running of the competitions.

Over the last 25 years the club has organised and hosted the prestigious Kent Classic and British All Comers Sea Angling Championship from the north shores of the Island. In the early years when the competition was a 5 mile rover it attracted an average of 500 anglers from all over the south of England, but because of sea defence works the competition entry had to be reduced to 400 anglers all of whom were competing for a prize fund of just over £3,000.

The new committee decided it was time for a change and decided to turn the match into a pegged event, since then the competition has gone from strength to strength with the entry books closed well over a month before hand, we also were fortunate to obtain a major sponsorship deal with Anyfish Anywhere and local businesses sponsoring pairs winners, biggest bag and other £500 awards, there is also a fantastic prize table taking the total prize fund in excess of £10,000, making it one of the biggest angling competition payout's in Great Britain.

The Committee

The Chairman
Paul Johnson better known as the gentleman or jolly Johnson has been the longest serving member of the sheerness steel sea angling club. His wealth of club and angling knowledge, his calming influence, and his authority at club meetings and competitions is always very well received.

The Vice Chairman
Alan Wildish or better known as legs, he is an excellent lieutenant when the chairman cannot make the meetings, his ability to delegate, and his knowledge of the club constitution and other local bylaws is very beneficial when issues arise.

The Treasurer
Trevor Back has been the club treasurer since the new committee was formed We now can request an up to date report at any time knowing the figures are Up to date and correct, in the past it was quite difficult to obtain the information that was requested, but since Trevor took up this position in the club we have an excellent understanding were we stand financially.

Club Secretary
Alan Jeffrey is one of the most well known anglers at the club; his enthusiasm to the sport is second to none. He has been the club secretary since the new committee was formed and is instrumental in obtaining the sponsorship for the Kent Classic. He is also very keen to push forward with the junior side of the club, he also writes the fishing column in the local paper and is highly respected throughout the angling community.
